THE KNIFE WOUND TO DARLIE'S THROAT CAME WITHIN 2 MILLIMETERS OF HER CAROTID ARTERY, AN INJURY WHICH IF IT HAD BEEN ANY DEEPER, WOULD HAVE KILLED HER IN MERE MINUTES.
Just before 2:30 a.m. on June 6, 1996, an intruder entered the home of Darin and Darlie Routier in Rowlett, Texas and murdered their two oldest boys, Devon, 6, and Damon, 5, as they slept in the family room with their mother after watching movies.
Darlie was also viciously attacked, but managed to fight off the intruder, who then fled from the home. However, just days later Darlie was charged with the murders of both her sons.
Darlie was prosecuted for the murder of 5-year-old Damon in early 1997. She was convicted and sentenced to death. She has been on Texas Death Row for 25 years. She was never prosecuted for the murder of Devon.
Darlie was convicted primarily based on now-debunked sciences, character assassination, and the infamous (and much misunderstood) "Silly String Video”.
Darlie is currently being represented by the Innocence Project of Texas. In addition, the Dallas County DA’s Conviction Integrity Unit has agreed to do a comprehensive review of her case.
