HOW IT STARTED:
Kerry was wrongfully convicted of the brutal rape and murder of Linda Edwards in Tyler, Texas in 1978. In 1996, the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals overturned his conviction saying that "prosecutorial and police misconduct has tainted this entire matter from the outset."
HOW IT WENT:
Kerry has been pursued by Smith County, Texas prosecutors for 47 years! Kerry has been through 3 capital murder trials (2 capital convictions and 1 hung jury) and nearly a 4th! In 1999, when Kerry was facing a fourth capital murder trial, Smith County prosecutors withheld exculpatory evidence in order to force Kerry into taking a plea deal that was offered ON THE MORNING HIS 4TH TRIAL WAS TO BEGIN! The judge gave Kerry just 30 minutes to decide. That's not a typo. 30 MINUTES! Fearful of being sent back to death row by prosecutors who were determined to see him executed, Kerry took an Alford Plea WITH NO ADMISSION OF GUILT.
